TRANSIENT – Transient

Ok, I am gonna state right from the beginning that I am a fan of grindcore and on paper, this is just the sort of thing that should float my boat. The beats are slamming, the riffs are deathly and the mix of fast to slow is pretty much exactly how I like it.

So what’s the problem? The vocals of Krysta Martinez (who you might know from Landmine Marathon) don’t do it for me in the least. Ok, they are ferocious, but there is too much angsty bellowing going on. It sounds like her voice is going to fail at times, like the power is in the lungs but not the vocal chords, which in my eyes makes it feel weak and it even reminds me a bit of emo here and there. I am not against women in extreme music at all, but compare the vocals on this with Serge from Leng Tch’e or Travis from Cattle Decapitation…

If you already know Transient or Krysta and like them/her, feel free to add 1 or even 1/5 to the score below. For me though, the vocals are a fatal blot on what would have been an excellent record…
