CORONATUS – Terra Incognita

Fourth album for this German symphonic/gothic metal sextet who feature two female vocalists within their ranks. With one handling soprano parts and the other a normal rock oriented voice, “Terra Incognita” is a 12 song , 54 minute record with an epic nature and folk elements without relenting in the heavier guitar department. Many of the songs are sung in German and Latin, but do not expect Coronatus to be very soft in their approach.
I think they have a lot in common with Epica, with a slight pagan affinity during many of the instrumental breaks or transitions. For my ears “Terra Incognita” has too much going on for the average consumer to grab onto consistent, distinct song cohesion- which the better gothic metal bands have down pat. As a result this will be a very distant memory to my collection.
