Renowned Norwegian blues rocker Bjørn Berge released his latest record just a couple of weeks ago via the lovely and eclectic Apollon Records, and it is a gritty-sounding and emotionally charged yet charming affair that offers an interesting take on the blues. More than that though, it offers a highly creative interpretation of songs by the cult American outfit Morphine (hence the title of the LP), which is to say that this is essentially a tribute album, or a covers LP, if you will. Regardless, Morphine had a unique musical identity that saw them combine alt. rock with blues and hints of jazz and Americana, and their songs and lyrics often evoked an aura that lent itself well to the imagination and was close in spirit to the findings and revelations that were to be found in the writings of the Beat generation authors and poets. Berge has taken all of that, digested it properly, and eventually churned out eight renditions of Morphine tracks that sport the characteristics and style of his own playing while simultaneously maintaining the spirit of the originals. That is rather impressive in its own right, I find, and the fact that acoustic baritone guitars are at the front and center of it all makes it even cooler.
The inherent groove of these eight tightly structured compositions adds a certain pulse and energy to the proceedings, and the overall result is a catchy and convincing one. Berge’s inimitable vocals infuse the material with charisma and a wicked dose of marvel and mystery, and the pace and the feel of tunes such as “French Fries with Pepper,” “All Wrong,” and “You Look Like Rain” leave a lasting impression and fill the room with warmth and a strong whiff of genuine passion.
Morphine is robust and solid stuff with a delightful wee-small-hours touch to it.
