MALUM – From the Voids

Considering the many fabulous aspects and overall quality of the harrowing EP titled Towards Nothingness (2025) and the full-length assault In Nauseum (2023) by the Norwegian black metal entity known as Malum, it should come as no surprise that many of us have eagerly awaited and looked forward to the group’s sophomore effort. And lo and behold, the release date is nigh, and it turns out that a perfectly dark and malicious opus is about to descend on mankind and leave us feeling empty and worth less than a fucking postage stamp, and rightly so as we deserve no better than that, really. Simply put, From the Voids marks a massive leap forward for these purveyors of antipathy and nihilistic thinking.

Comprised of six fully-formed compositions from which emanates a dismal and somber atmosphere that is so thick, overwhelming, and damn near impenetrable that it defies belief, their upcoming record is a step-up in every sense of the word and serves as both a continuation of their past works, musically and lyrically speaking, and a new, terrifyingly confident expression that is nothing if not impactful. Every nuance and element carries a deep-seated feeling of negativity within, and the production is spot on too in that it emphasizes the horrifying absurdity of mankind while also letting each instrument breathe despite the claustrophobic aura and dense vibe of the material. The most notable and compelling cuts include “Ignorance Made Bliss,” “In Gloom II,” and the epic title track with only “Hollow” and “Deranged and Depraved” feeling a little less powerful and mesmeric than the rest of the material.

From the Voids is a relentlessly bleak and austere piece of work that forces the listeners to reconcile themselves with the fact that there is no light at the end of the tunnel and that existential dread is a thing to be embraced rather than shunned. Gripping and unshakable stuff and a perfect example of how to craft cold, cynical, and emotionally intense black metal with superb riffs, splendid arrangements, and a proper hypnotic ambience to it.
