MAVERICK – interview

Below is a little chat with the Canadian punk trio MAVERICK, based in Montreal, a band not shy to turn it up to 11 and deliver a good dose of energy and insanity in their music. Read more about their inspiration and plans or wishes for the future

Introduce your band:
We’re a punk rock band from Montreal, we play fast and loud (most of the time), and we love to have fun ?. We are, Eddie (guitar, vocals), Fil (bass, backing vocals) and Elliott (drums, backing vocals).

What’s the hardest part about being a band in this day and age?
Working as a team, towards the same goal. Not only all schedules must coincide, but everyone has to come together for the band and where they aspire to go.
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have all that and see eye to eye.

When did you realise that your project had the potential to be much more than just a fun idea?
When I was still jamming my riffs and tunes on my own and someone snuck up on me, thinking it was the radio. That was a good indicator.
Also, whenever we were jamming in the early days, and people would come knocking on the door to give us compliments about the music. It’s always nice to get feedbacks like this. It lets us know we must be doing something good.

Tell us about your latest release, why should we check it out?
That would be our single, The Tower. It’s on our Bandcamp (, so people can check out our EP Bones Shaker as well. It’s also featured on the amazing compilation Angered Intellectuals, put out by 8up Records. They should definitely check that one out to discover a whole bunch of great bands. Only hits.

How does a song typically come together for you?
One usually comes with a good structure, and we build around that. Together jamming or when practicing on our own, individually. It all depends on how inspiration comes. Every body’s quite creative in the band, so whoever has something he feels like sharing and working on, if it fits the sound and we all like it, we work on it.

How would you describe your sound to an unfamiliar reader?
Depending on the listener, the comments change. Basically, we play fast and energetic Punk Rawk. It is quite hard, and frankly not of our desire to label us with a particular style. One thing’s for sure, we play punk. So people can add whatever fits their description the best, we’re cool with that.

What do you want listeners to take away from listening to your band?
The energy and good feeling, we hope 🙂

Where would you really like to tour that you haven’t done so yet, and why?
Europe. The scene over there just seems very well organized, apart from the beauty and commodity of easy travels. Plus, Europeans have a really good reputation when it comes to receiving traveling bands.

How would you say that the sound of your band has progressed over the years?
It started a bit more up-tone skate punk-ish, but with the same energy though. It took a bit of a hardcore turn these past couple of years. And now, we’re looking to shake things up again with bringing back this skate-punk sound, a bit of ska and whatnot to it.

How excited are you for 2024, and what can fans expect from you?
Quite a lot actually! We’re brewing a bunch of ideas for our next EP, cool merch and who knows what else.

Thanks for having us!

With Mucho Love, Yours Truly.

(Eddie, Fil and Elliott)
