TOBY HITCHCOCK – Changes

Toby Hitchcock (Pride of Lions) recently released this third solo record of his and as with its predecessor, "Reckoning" (2019), we are treated to melodic rock/AOR and the man is in possession of a stunning voice and delivers immense vocal power throughout, which is great. You will also receive a solid dose of infectious melodies and good hooks, and the whole affair is quite polished and pristine-sounding in terms of its production values and sonic qualities. Apart from the two expertly crafted and deftly executed compositions that are "Before I Met You (Xano Esena)" and especially the epic "Garden of Eden", the album lacks those big, juicy, and irresistible tunes that will keep you coming back for more.
The output is neither devoid of atmosphere nor does the musicianship leave anything to be desired, so no complaints there, but "Changes" is simply not as thrilling and exciting as it could have been, and it feels too similar to countless other releases out there that belong in the same genres and categories as this one. Personally, I felt that the aforementioned "Reckoning" had more charisma and identity to it. Like I said, the vocals are absolutely fabulous, but the LP never truly takes flight or delivers a real punch. Still, if you are into Pride of Lions and Hitchcock’s previous solo offerings, you should probably give this one a go.
