CHALICE OF SIN – Chalice of Sin

Chapel of Sin is a brand-new outfit spearheaded by vocalist Wade Black (Leatherwolf, Seven Witches, Crimson Glory) and what we have here is a relatively old-school heavy metal offering that recalls Accept, U.D.O., Judas Priest, and Jag Panzer among others.
With a punishing rhythm section and an abundance of riffs that are either pounding or galloping, these guys have churned out a sonically powerful record that truly packs a punch and manages to sound pretty damn massive. There is nothing original or innovative to what Chalice of Sin do, but you can tell that they mean business and perform their stuff with a palpable sense of determination and confidence, which is commendable.
Although the musicianship is highly competent, some tracks are much more interesting than others and the main problem for me is that it is a mixed bag in terms of quality and substance. Some pieces are mundane, some are merely mildly entertaining, and others are fucking great. The atmospheric title track is a fist-pumping delight, and the use of keyboards is exceptionally cool here. The lyrics to "Whisky" are somewhat daft but the tune itself is both charming and catchy. "Miracle" is a thick, heavy juggernaut and boasts a fabulous solo whereas "The Show" stands out due to the fact that it is almost akin to something that Megadeth could have done. Again, there is a lot of wicked stuff to be discovered on the disc, but it is neither solid nor potent from beginning to end. Still, die-hard fans of heavy metal and power metal might find this interesting.
