DISPYT – Den Ständigt Närvarande Ångesten

The foul collective of Finnish dirtbags known as Dispyt offers an interesting take on black metal and crust punk, or rather a mixture of the two genres. The song structures and arrangements are rather simple and that goes for the riffs as well – everything is designed to melt your brain and tear you a new asshole. A straight-up, no-frills take on vile music, if you will.
Musically and lyrically, this is as raw and filthy as it gets, and these ugly fuckers pull no punches and obviously revel in the fact that you and me totally suck and are rather worthless. The harsh vibe and the punishing attack of the short compositions make this a very intense listening experience, and they certainly manage to evoke a sense of urban decay, spiritual bankruptcy, (self-) loathing, hatred, and relentless misanthropy. It is loud and noisy, and at times it sounds and feels as if everything is about to fall apart, which adds a chaotic and reckless vibe to the proceedings. Imagine a drunk and drug-riddled cross between Bestial Mockery and Alfahanne – that is what certain parts of Dispyt sounds like to yours truly. I personally favor the tunes that have a sense of groove and a truly thick atmosphere to them, namely “Total Alkoholist”, "Mest Bara Van", and “Då Samvetet Tryter”, but the great thing about this disc is that the entire aura of the cursed thing is consistently bleak from start to finish.
“Den Ständigt Närvarande Ångesten” may not necessarily be something that will find its way to my record player often as this album requires a certain mood on the part of the listener in order to get underneath one’s skin, but it is solid and strangely entertaining listen.
