MORTIIS – The Perfect Reject

This wicked remix album by Mortiis, which is based on his “Perfectly Defect” record from 2010, took me by surprise and quite a few of its songs managed to blow yours truly the fuck away, which is great.
Most remix albums fail to add anything cool or vital to the original album version, but I must say that “The Perfect Reject” is at times even more enjoyable than the original album material. In fact, the first six tunes in particular are absolutely riveting and bursting with energy. That especially goes for the two different versions of “Closer to the End” (i.e. the “Cyras” and “Katscan” renditions) and the pulverizing instrumental “The Punished”. There are plenty of dark and ominous soundscapes, cold and sharp guitars, industrial unpleasantries and bitter vocals, and so on and so forth.
Overall, the album is intense yet musically exciting and unpredictable, and there is a lot of creativity in play on it. “Perfectly Defect” is a solid and enjoyable record in and of itself, but “The Perfect Reject” feels more lively and vibrant to me. How often can you say that about a remix album? This might be more for the followers and fans of Mortiis as opposed to the casual listeners out there, but if you do dig dark ambient/industrial metal/electro rock then I suggest you head on over to Bandcamp and check this one out. Like I said, it was a most welcome surprise to me.
