WOLVERINE – Viva Machina

WOLVERINE – Viva Machina

I have some memories of Wolverine being a death metal band back in the days, but today these swedes are all about the more progressive and atmospheric kind of music. Nothing wrong with that, we all know the fabulous journey of Katatonia, and Wolverine appears just as comfortable and confident as their fellow countrymen. No surprise really, as they started up as early as 1995, with "Viva Machina" being full-length album number five.

"Viva Machina" kicks of with 14 minute long "The Bedlam Overture", a piece that showcases everything Wolverine is about, namley atmospheric and somehow haunting music, sometimes heavy, sometimes mellow, with great vocal performance by Stefan Zell, who really puts his heart and soul into every song. As for the music, synth and guitar are the key elements here, and to me the two of them are perfectly balanced, sometimes on their own, sometimes together, but never to much. Finally, the rythm section keeps everything together, securing a natural flow in the music throughout the album. Definitely a must-have (at least must-check) for all the prog-metal fans out there, or for anyone who simply just like good music…
