CELESTIAL GRAVE – Burial Ground Trance (Tape)

‘Burial Ground Trance’ is the debut EP from Finnish BM duo Celestial Grave and what an awesome opening statement it is. On the one hand, we have a very primitive deathened approach to BM, laced with plenty of thrashing savagery and necrotic riffing. So it will satisfy fans of the bestial school. On the other hand, these guys handle rhythm in a way that reminds me of the best in early Greek BM. Simply outstanding. But best of all is the melodic underlay that comes about due to the pair’s ability to expand on a theme musically and pull the most out of it. Their middle eights are trancelike and enveloping in the way they engross the listener and drag them down to the crypt. I have always argued that since EPs only generally run to about 14 minutes, they should be this good -but they so seldom are. I look forward to more from these guys but in the meantime will have this offering on heavy repeat.
