THE 3RD ATTEMPT – Born in Thorns

The 3rd Attempt is a brand new Norwegian black metal outfit consisting of four members, two of which are seasoned veterans within the black metal scene, namely Tchort (ex-Blood Red Throne, ex-Carpathian Forest) and BloodPervertor (ex-Carpathian Forest). The outfit is rounded out by vocalist Ødamark (ex-Midnattsvrede) and drummer Tybalt (Fortid, Den Saakaldte). The debut album is entitled "Born in Thorns" and consists of 10 songs. So far, so good.
Musically speaking, The 3rd Attempt performs old-school black metal infused with a lot of groovy and thrashy parts, which makes for a somewhat varied and dynamic album. The vocals are also quite diverse and are often multilayered, which, again, add some variety to the whole thing. The musicianship is very good, but that is hardly surprising, is it? A lot of the riffs are simple and catchy, but the song arrangements and the way in which different elements and melodies are interwoven at times are quite cool, some of the best examples being the song entitled "We Defy" and the half-way epic title track. "Firestorm", which contains an eerie piano part, is also one of the highlights of the album. The record sounds raw and unpolished, but not in that lo-fi-bedroom-black-metal sense. The album does have its punchy and crushing moments, that is for damn sure.
"Born in Thorns" is neither something new nor something groundbreaking, but it is pretty good, and although I am not completely and utterly blown away by it, I do find it fairly entertaining and solid. It will be interesting to see and hear what this band will come up with in the future.
