NOMANS LAND – Last Crusade

Russian Viking metal from Nomans Land on their fifth full-length "Last Crusade" and first for Massacre Records. Strengths on songs like the marching "Sons of the Nord" and spider-web oriented "Warrior’s Path" reside in the cat and mouse chase the guitarists employ against the drumming – sometimes working in tandem, at other times emphasizing the main hook and melodies on hand. The power metal version of Ensiferum is an apt comparison, the clean and harsh vocal contrasts an added dynamic touch but aren’t really above the norm in this genre.
A 40 minute record that does provide modest entertainment, Nomans Land are probably best understood on the live front where Viking metal can encompass a visual angle beyond the music.
