13/8 Bit is the debut from progressive metallers Third Ion. As you can guess from the cover the lyrical drive is Sci-fi and computer games. The sound is reminiscent of Devin Townsend, which is hardly surprising considering the involvement of DT bassist Mike Young. In terms of ability, this is a very accomplished group of musicians. You know when you are listening to a record and you get the feeling the artists involved are at such a level that they can express themselves effortlessly? That is the case here. The songs are good too – a nice mix between what is catchy and memorable and what is technically interesting. Plus, they don’t get too wanky with the whole 8 bit/gaming angle as some bands have in the past. It is there but it doesn’t interfere too much with the proceedings.
Overall, this is extremely melodic and accessible. Fans of DT, Alice in Chains and Dream Theatre will find much to enjoy here. This is definitely a band I will come back to in the future. I’d like to see them covering some darker, more narrative material – this is the type of band born to write a double concept album.
Bring it on!
