MONOX – Perception Changes
Croatian metal isn’t high on my aural radar screen – but here is the debut album from Monox, a five-piece act that straddle the line of melodic death and groove metal. "Perception Changes" struggles to gain appeal because of its reliance on computer tricks and guitar effects that mask the true abilities of the musicians on hand. Obvious low-tuned breakdowns on "Cascading Visions" as well as a poorly triggered drum tone makes me nauseous three songs in, and that’s not a good sign for a 9 song effort that doesn’t break the 35 minute barrier. Factor in semi-monotone growls that would fit better in an industrial act and riffs that are too dry to really lift the excitement level and you see that Monox just goes through the motions.
