TUSMØRKE – Riset Bak Spielet

Anyone for some neo-psychedelic Norwegian prog rock? Tusmorke sound like they were assembled in 1969 when painting flowers on your face was de rigueur and every album had at least one song that was about pixies. ‘Riset Bak Spielet’ has a strong vintage vibe. Harmonised vocals, strings, theremin and flute are the order of the day. 5 Songs in 45 minutes will give you an idea of track length, with an excellent mixture of folksy/ethereal/dreamy and darker/gutsy material. At times, there is a ritualistic feel, with chanting and robe-wearing. So, as far as I am concerned, lots of good things on offer here!

Ok, so I have admitted that I am a fan of this kind of music. I love the slow-build-up and the long sections where the instruments are allowed to find their own space and express themselves. I love the range of instruments and the range of emotional ground covered. I love the complicated song structures and the band’s ability to play such pieces with an ease that makes them feel like a jam session.

Lots of this kind of thing has been coming out of Scandinavia in recent years. Most of it comes pretty close to nailing a sound that is at once authentic and yet also works for a modern audience and a new generation of listeners. Tusmorke are top of the pile in this regard. Put on your beaded headband, tune in and drop out…
