NEUROTIC DEATHFEST er som vanlig årets første rene death metal festival vi tar tak i her i Eternal Terror. Det er også snart den eneste festivalen av denne typen og av denne størrelsen som er igjen i Europa. Og i år feirer Neurotic Deahfest 10 år.

Opprinnelig het festivalen Rotterdam Deathfest og ble arrangert i Rotterdam de 2 første årene. I 2006 skiftet festivalen navn til Neurotic Deathfest og flyttet samtidig til Dynamo i Eindhoven. I 2007 flyttet festivalen nok en gang på seg, denne gangen til Tilburg. Samtidig med disse bybyttene og navneskiftene har antall band økt for hvert år. I debutåret 2004 var det kun åtte band som spilte, året etter var det 13, i 2006 var det 15 band til stede mens i 2007 var det antallet steget til 23 band. Året etter var antallet steget ytterligere til 32 og i 2009 var det 31 band som spilte. I 2010 og 2011 var det hele 42 band som underholdt i Tilburg. I fjor var festivalen utvidet til tre dager og fikk naturlig nok enda flere band, denne gangen 48 i tallet. I år har de fortsatt tre dager, men har redusert antall band til 44.

Neurotic Deathfest arrangeres innendørs og det faktum at de har hele 48 band på 3 dager i fjor, gjorde at festivalen var mer enn bare en seriøs utfordrer til tittelen "Nord-Europas største innendørs extreme metal festival", noe Inferno har hatt et ballegrep på i flere år. Med sine 44 band i år, vil jeg påstå at de fortsatt har det sterkeste grepet rundt tittelen og jaggu har de ikke klart å få det med på årets plakat også 🙂

I fjor ble festivalen arrangert noe tidligere enn tidligere år, men i år er de igjen tilbake i begynnelsen av mai. I fjor ble antall scener redusert fra 4 til 3 og i motsetning fra tidligere utgaver av festivalen, er det nå mulig å få med seg nesten alle bandene. Noe overlapping er det fremdeles, men sånt er uunngåelig.

Music festivals aren’t just about the music anymore. There is a lot of other stuff going on like merch-stands, tattoo-stands and stuff. What can Neurotic Deathfest offer their audience besides the metal?

Besides metal, and a whole lot of beer there is a large festival market. Apart from all the bands there is a great variety of vendors selling sought after vinyl, exclusive merchandise, and so on. Also we have Costin, artist of the festival, coming over with an exposition of his death metal art. This looks awesome!

Does Neurotic Deathfest have a main festival hotel in Tilburg where the metalfans can meet with the bands for breakfast and drinks?

Obviously we like to respect the privacy of the bands a little bit, but to give you a hint: The hotels in the direct surroundings of the 013 venue is where a lot of bands are located. As well as a lot of audience by the way. This is actually the great thing about the festival. Artists, Press, VIPS and regular visitors they all come to see bands, meet eachother and party with one another. There are no boundaries!

The typical Neurotic Deathfest audience; is he or she Dutch or do you get a lot of foreigners attending your festival?

This festival attracts people from over 30 different countries. Not only the Netherlands and the surrounding countries as you might think, but basically from allover Europe… and beyond! People from all European countries, but also Japan, United States, Canada, Russia and so on. Which is great!

Have you seen a steady increase in the number of foreigners in their audience or have the economic problems in several countries in recent years given you less foreigners?

It always has been a festival that attracts a wide audience geographically. This year we see a little less people from southern European countries, but a bit more from Eastern Europe. So it differs a little bit per country, but the majority stays the same.

What is the capacity of the venue?

The festival capacity is 2500 people per day. Nice and cosey!

Are you sold out or can the fans who want to attend the Neurotic Deathfest 2013 still get tickets?

We still have some tickets left, so be sure to get yours while they last.

Neurotic Deathfest is all about death metal and most of its brutal subcultures. But yet, the variety is there. What can you say about the bands playing in Neurotic Deathfest 2013?

I always like to mix things up within the limits of the festival. So I would like to have main big attractions, but also smaller bands from further countries that you don´t see too often. I always like to balance the amount of technical new school bands, old school more mid tempo orientated bands and grindcore bands as much as possible. Basically, for everybody who loves their extreme death metal in any shape of form there should be enough to make the visit worthwhile.

Are there any bands you want to see in the Neurotic Death Fest lineup that you have not managed to book since the festival began in 2004?

This year is the first year that Devourment is coming. We´ve booked them some years ago, but they ran into some troubles at the border when flying in for their first tourdate. Ever since we´ve tried to book them again, and it finally happened!

Which of the bands playing this year is a must-see for you personally?

I would really like to see Pig Destroyer, I was mailing with their main guy Scott Hull the other day, and I concluded that I haven´t seen them live since 2005 somewhere in Belgium. So it is about time again! Other bands I really like to see myself are Repulsion, Death To All, Magrudergrind, Incantation Vallenfyre, Haemorrhage, Immolation and Antropomorphia.

This year is the 10 year anniversary for Neurotic Deathfest. During these 10 years, what has been the absolute highlight for you?

Selling out the festival completely for the first time in 2008 was really overwhelming. Other than that the real highlight is seeing people from all over the world coming together and having an awesome time. Meeting up with old friends, and making new, while doing what you like most: Enjoying death metal! Besides from all the legendary performances this is definitely the highlight for me.

And what have been the biggest challenges?

We´ve had some cancellations in the past, which is inevitable as a festival organiser unfortunately. But these are just things you have to deal with. You always have the odd band member missing his flight, which you have to arrange a new one for, and so on. But that’s just part of what makes organising festivals such a great experience. So nothing to complain here!
