"Ritual Death Metal" is the sixth full-length from Finnish deathsters Deathchain – and the sixth to have death/dead in the title! Musically we are looking at some dark and hard DM with a slight influence from the early Swedish scene. Not super brutal and not from the techie school either, Deathchain has a blackened feel at times that validates the ‘ritual’ in the title. The musicianship is pretty good and I like the bleak sound the band have created, but apart from that, I don’t find this to be the most charismatic or engaging release. The songs aren’t strong enough and the feel of the band isn’t distinctive enough for my liking.
So – a ‘good’ release, but we’ve seen plenty better so far this year.
