FUNERUS – Reduced to Sludge

US death metallers Funerus have an approach that reminds me of the first few Bolt Thrower albums involving generally slow to mid-paced drumming that forms a backdrop on which everything else is hung. It is an approach that works well if you like driving, groove laden death metal, and it allows the band to concentrate on song dynamics rather trying to shred the paint off their guitars. It also provides for a coherent tone or vibe that follows the cover artwork and the album name well.

On the whole, this is a likable album and one that feels original in an age where so many DM bands are getting more technical and brutal at the expense of the songs. Although the songs aren’t enough to make you want to change your life and get a band tattoo, this is still an enjoyable listen from a very competent act.
