INFINITA SYMPHONIA – A Mind’s Chronicle

Infinita Symphonia is a fairly straight forward power-progressive metal band with hints of extreme vocals, symphonic arrangements and focus on melodic content contra instrumental masturbation. The material presented on "A Mind’s Chronicle" isn’t too far from what Pagan’s Mind has done on their later albums. The difference being that Infinita Symphonia is every bit as pretentious as the band name would indicate.
The music and production are well executed, but the riffing, melodies and solos are as predictable as yesterday’s episode of star trek. (Killing two birds with one stone there, offending both AOR lovers of predictability and trekkies in one throw.) There is nothing you haven’t heard a thousand times before on "A Mind’s Chronicle". Even the tougher tracks make me lose interest after the intro. There are some nice passages and intros every now and then, but not enough to defend the price of a CD/Download or whatever…
In addition I find the lead singer to be more annoying than pleasing to the ear. He does have a good specter, I’ll give him that. When he is pushing his voice for castrato screams or more testosterone laden parts ala Sir Russel Allen he works quite well. The problem is that for the most the vocal is placed in a nasal midrange chanting which does become tiresome after a song or two. Take the passage 01:35-02:10 of the song “Only One Reason” and you’ll know what I’m talking about. It sounds like Pagan’s Mind, but the singer in Infinita Symphonia is never more than an third-rate Nils K. Rue.
If you can’t get enough of Pagan’s Mind, Queensrÿche, Evergrey or Kamelot you might get something out of this one, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
