HURTSMILE – Hurtsmile

Vocalist Gary Cherone joins his brother guitarist Markus Cherone for this new project while Extreme is in down time from touring and recording. Intertwining melodic hard rock with a modern squeal groove meets Stone Temple Pilots slant (“Slave” and “Tolerance Song” meet this criteria), Hurtsmile have the occasional exciting part but rarely flesh out material that moves me. Gary’s delivery isn’t at fault- in fact his sarcastic, expressive personality shines on songs like “Just War Theory” and a ballad like The Beatles-esque “Painter Paint”.

Might be a worthy diversion for some- however I’ll await the next Extreme effort with Nuno Bettencourt and sit Hurtsmile out to the sidelines.
