Bio
Quick Change in their time was one of the best known underground bands, due to their extreme commitment to the metal scene – they wrote and sent their demos to numerous fanzines an magazines worldwide. Finally the band managed to sign a deal with Roadrunner Records, soon to release their debut "Circus of Death". After that the band had a pretty long break and only after the new millennium started, they returned with a follow-up. The band was officially formed in 1982 in Illinois, with the name originating from an auto racing product. The original line-up consisted of Mike McCarthy (guitar), Dubs Anderson (guitar), Dwayne Whitehead (vocals), Mike Saint (bass) and John Kruczek (drums). They did record some demos in 1982, but their first 'serious' demo wasn't released until 1985. The demo named simply "Demo '85" had a huge impact on the underground scene. This wasn't a surprise, though. Quick Change did not sit around before the recording – they actively promoted the bands in every place possible. Between 1983 and 1987 they sent over 5,400 free demo tapes, stickers and buttons worldwide; by '82 articles about Quick Change had appeared in over 42 fanzines, by '87 – in 54. The same year the band won the title of Railers of the Month in the Z-Rock radio station, which covered 22 states of America. The effort definitely paid off. The first reviews of their debut demo were very promising. "The response on the first demo really got us going" – recalls Anderson. But the true image of Quick Change was yet to be seen. Soon after releasing their second big demo, "F.U.N." in 1988, the band signed a record deal with Roadrunner. In 1989 Quick Change's official debut, "Circus of Death", hit the stores. It featured all the tracks from the "F.U.N." demo, plus 8 new ones. The album proved to be a fast & furious combination of heavy riffs, wicked drums and Whitehead's powerful vocals. It got a handful of good reviews, but Anderson remembers one in particular: "I think the most important time of the band was a review of the album in Kerrang magazine. A the time Don Kaye was one of the most feared reviewers in the metal scene. Even our A&R guy ED Van Zijl from Roadrunner out of Holland was worried. But Don must of had a good day and we got 4 k's out of 5. He made a point to tell us how we could be better." Encouraged by the positive reception of the album, Quick Change begun the promoting tour. In their whole career they played next to bands such as Wrath, King Diamond, The Great Kat, Znöwhite, Damien, Zoetrope, Metal Church and Vandal – at that time a young band who often opened for Quick Change, today known as Disturbed. The band still remembers the popularity in the underground scene, especially some of their older fans: "A big fan of ours in the 80's was a kid who later became president of Century Media Records – Marco Barbieri. We still have the picture of Marco wearing the Quick Change T-shirt." After the success of "Circus of Death" the band was put on hold. The next album appeared after 12 years – "Money, Lust & Greed" was an individual release, same as "IV Life" from 2003. The last known recording by Quick Change is a concert album "Live at The Metro" (2004). The new line-up features Chris Harbin on bass and Russ Barron on vocals, but the core of the band is still unchanged. As Anderson said back in 1987: "The bottom line is Quick Change is here to stay – we ain't gonna die!"
