backbone is a polish band playing a modern blend of atmospheric / post / doom metal. Active since 2012, the group creates music drawn from inspirations such as Dirge, Opeth, Yob, Cult of Luna, Blindead, and Obscure Sphinx. The band has released three EPs, one split, and a full-length album, “Embracing Dissolution”. Currently, they are putting the finishing touches on their second LP and the fourth edition of their own Blood&Bone festival, with proceeds dedicated to supporting bone cancer patients.

The second full-length release by the post / doom metal quintet backbone, titled “Ama Nesciri”, is a concept album telling the story of the Mystic – a figure torn between the world they perceive and their own spiritual needs. In their inner journey, the Mystic strives to achieve enlightenment, and this pursuit forms the axis of the story. The character has no defined gender, historical era, or professed religion.

The story begins with the discovery of faith as a guiding light, leads through a turbulent youth and the meanders of mature exploration, up to the point of achieving enlightenment. Its aftermath, however, is confronting a difficult truth and coming to terms with its consequences.

The title “Ama Nesciri”, derived from a quote by Thomas à Kempis, loosely translates to “love to be unknown” or “love to be unnoticed”, which places the presented story in sharp contrast to the modern world, where being seen becomes the essence of existence.

The album tells of the deep and universally human need for spirituality in every dimension, leaving questions about the validity of such quests open. References to world religions, philosophy, and quotes from contemporary and ancient authors included in the lyrics serve as interpretive clues for each of the eight tracks.

Featured on the album are Kacper Kajzderski (bassist and vocalist of Obsidian Mantra) – growls on the track “Volatile”, Krzysztof Traczyk (Christopher Sawyer, ROSK) – vocals on the title track “Ama Nesciri”, and Barbara Kowalska, Alina Kowalik, and Anna Gębala – female voices co-creating the “sea of souls” in the central track “Dissolved in Atman”.
