BLACK CAT MOAN – new album out

Stockholm-based Black Cat Moan released their third album Wasteland on 14 September.

Wasteland tells a haunting story in 3 pieces about a dystopic place that the listener is invited to, which starts in fear, anger and despair but ends in solace.

Wasteland is also the title of Black Cat Moan’s third full length album. It follows the band’s eponymous debut album released in 1991, and its second album Departure, released in 2023 after the band had reunited after a 30-year hiatus.

As with its second album Departure, Wasteland is written, recorded and produced by the three founding members of the band; Lars Isaksson (lead vocals), Jörgen Lantto (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Bo Åström (drums and percussion). On most tracks on Wasteland, the band is also joined by New York session guitarist Ziv Shalev on lead guitar.

Including the 3 Wasteland tracks, the new album contains 12 tracks. Many of them are straight forward rock numbers such as Voodoo Power, Black Sugar, Down My Spine and Degeneration, which forms a natural continuation from the band’s two previous albums. Compared to the band’s previous albums, there is more diversity in style on the new album, examples include the 3 title tracks, Primal Scream and Screaming Blue Murder.

The previous albums have received high acclaim. As stated by Kerrang! when Black Cat Moan was released in 1991, “Black Cat Moan trade in ample, sumptuous riffs, sewn by professional hands into a bed of powerful chord progressions and melodies”.

The second album Departure also received strong reviews from critics. According to Netherland based Bluestown Music: “Try to imagine a mix of the music of early Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin. Black Cat Moan’s second album sounds the way every Classic Rock fan wants it: raw, dirty and hard!”

Wasteland has been recorded, mixed and produced in the band’s hometown Stockholm. The album was mastered by Steve Kilpatrick at Soundfackery.
