These Swedish legends never cease to either excite or confound the listener, or do both for that matter, but whichever way you see it, their outputs are something out of the ordinary and always warrant a good discussion.

There is always more than meets the eye when it comes to Cult of Luna’s sonic explorations, which is the beauty of what they do and one of the primary reasons one keeps revisiting their albums. I am not even sure how to classify their unique take on dense soundscapes anymore, but regardless, the upcoming In the Shadow of Your Shadow is as edgy, original-sounding, and frighteningly stirring that one could have wished for, and it captures and expands on a gripping dichotomy between resolution and inner darkness. Even at their heaviest and gnarliest, there is room for experimentation, and the LP elegantly moves past the more familiar post-metal and post-rock tropes out there, which is merely another way of saying that it offers its own unique take on progressive music and then some.

Overwhelmingly atmospheric and full of exploratory magnificence, In the Shadow of Your Shadow blends inventive arrangements and intricate details with punishing riffs, vocals both harsh and heartbreaking, and an undercurrent of simmering bleakness to perfection. Colossal tracks such as the 12-minute epic “Breach,” the relentlessly and emotionally devastating “Sadness,” the mournful and mesmerizing “A Way Back,” and the pensive, elegiac “Landby” are simply unforgettable and bound to enthrall you all. This offering is a more than worthy addition to the band’s catalog.
