GERSEY DEOFUL – Reign ov Hoof and Wing

I could not have been happier (nor more excited for that matter) when I saw that the New Jersey-based black metal outfit known as Gersey Deoful had unleashed a fresh new torrent of tunes collectively titled Reign ov Hoof and Wing. Their previous offerings have been a most welcome addition to my arsenal of sinister music, and their latest output sounds like the natural follow-up to its predecessors.

With its strong emphasis on memorable riffs and what can only be termed a very solid drive thanks to a superb rhythm section, the EP feels accessible and instantly appealing without lacking depth or layers. Imbued with an occult atmosphere that strikes these ears as quite pagan in nature, this is nothing short of an alluring gem that possesses an awe-inspiring oomph, and these ugly fuckers have never sounded better than they do here. “Sufi, the Inner Darkness,” which is a personal favorite, vaguely reminds me of early Gorgoroth due to the riffing, but then they take things so much further and the whole thing turns into a long-lasting climactic epic that delivers thrills and chills in equal measure. Did I mention that the vocals are as excellent and varied throughout as one could have hoped for? Dynamic black metal from the deepest pit of the foul American underground that makes for a compelling listen . . . wait a minute! Why the fuck are you still reading this and not checking it out on Bandcamp?
