HEATWAVES – Kappa

Released in late June by the ever-reliable Apollon Records and containing some of the coolest vibes and most inviting atmospheres that I have come across lately, this eclectic disc is a strangely beguiling affair that weaves indie pop, psychedelic rock, and jazz-like elements together to great effect. Actually, that description only gets us halfway there, but yeah, you get the idea, right? This Norwegian ensemble serves up eleven compositions that are filled to the brim with fascinating ideas and lovely surprises. The musicianship is first-class, the melodies are infectious, the arrangements are something out the ordinary and bound to excite you, and Kappa simply lends itself perfectly to warm, hazy days thanks to its soothing feel. On top of that, the whole affair is superbly produced and groovy as fuck, which is perfectly exemplified by ‘Aladdin Snake Oil’ and ‘Nugel’, but there are also subtle hints of melancholy to be enjoyed as evidenced by ‘Hercule Poirot’ and ‘Always Talking Shop’.  

With its dream-like aura and relaxed vibe, this album is a breath of fresh air and an invigorating listen that transcends genre definitions. Recommended.
