SHY, LOW – Snake Behind the Sun

The US quartet known as Shy, Low released this utterly intriguing post-rock gem of theirs just a couple of months ago and this is undoubtedly one of the most captivating releases that I have come across lately. Given that the term post-rock is rather diffuse, let me merely state that these guys conjure up uniquely textured and deeply atmospheric soundscapes that rather beautifully manage to weave various influences from noise rock, post-metal (or is that strange doom metal?), progressive rock, a slight touch of Americana with respect to certain melodies, and something akin to experimental ambient together with ease. Things sliver and slide seamlessly between the explosive and the introspective and there is not one dull moment to be had here.

Did I mention that "Snake Behind the Sun" is entirely instrumental and that it is all the better for it? All the instruments are allowed to breathe, and it never feels as if anything is missing from their relatively dense brand of original music. Crackling with energy and filled to the brim with creativity, this one is ridiculously heavy at times yet also wildly dynamic and unpredictable. Just do me a favor and check the epic album closer "Decease Spe Re" out and you will see what I mean.

"Snake Behind the Sun" a challenging listen and not necessarily something that would appeal to most, but make no mistake, it rules and comes highly recommended to those of you who cherish experimental metal.
