DEATHCULT – Cult of the Goat

The scummy purveyors of sinister Norwegian black metal known as Deathcult finally unearthed and unleashed their darkened sophomore opus very late last year and it has been worth the long wait (the debut offering was released all the way back in 2007).
With the core line-up consisting of Skagg (guitars and vocals), Thurzur (drums), and Hoest (bass) and the three of them being backed by a stellar cast of guest musicians, Deathcult conjure up deeply satanic and unholy musical rituals that are as nasty and unpleasant as they are well-composed and convincing. There is a certain tone and depth to "Cult of the Goat" that sets it apart from pretty much any other release by any given black metal horde out there, which is obviously a huge compliment to these guys. The vocals are just as disturbing and unsettling as one could have hoped for and the riffs are captivating while the foul atmosphere of the record instantly draws you in. On top of that, the melodies and lyrics go hand in hand rather nicely and the songs walk that fine line between being challenging and catchy. Some of the arrangements are quite clever and there are a number of wicked twists and turns to the disc that are utterly appealing, and it has to be said that tunes such as "The Oath" and "Devilgoat" are undoubtedly two of the best pieces ever written by the band. Superb stuff!
"Cult of the Goat" is an incredibly strong and worthwhile release that ought to please all you black metal fanatics and lovers of the occult out there. Cruel Norwegian black metal of the most abhorrent and vile kind. Consider yourself warned, fuckbag.
