JIZZY PEARL – All You Need is Soul
Former Love/Hate vocalist Jizzy Pearl is still going strong and rocking out as evidenced by this loud and wonderfully energetic 12-track output of his, which comprises all the best elements and traits from the aforementioned band as well as Pearl’s knack for writing songs with solid hooks and adrenaline-fueled riffs to them. There is nothing new, revolutionary, or even remotely original about "All You Need Is Soul", but it is a hell of a good time and it is impossible not to get carried away by the raw power and enthusiasm that permeate the record. In many ways, it sounds like a mixture between early Guns N Roses, Skid Row, Ratt, and L.A. Guns, but there is no mistaking that voice of Pearl’s and he sounds driven as ever and hellbent on delivering some kick-ass tunes this time around. There is a certain swagger and cool attitude to "All You Need is Soul" that is quite charming and the musicianship is really strong, which is to say that it sounds as if these guys had a great time putting the songs together and recording the album. Those gritty guitars and fiery vocals on top of the band’s hard-hitting and groovy rhythm section work like a charm. The bluesy elements that sneak into the mix here and there even bring to mind AC/DC, which is awesome, and there is certainly a lot of passion coursing through the disc – make no mistake about that.
Highlights include the irresistible "House of Sin", the bouncy "High for an Eye", the raunchy "Little Treasures", and the atmospheric "When the Devil Comes" with the latter having a slightly darker and different vibe to it than the rest of the material that constitutes the album. Not every song is a winner, but all in all, "All You Need Is Soul" is a great slab of unfiltered and wild hard rock music with giant-sized balls to it. This stuff is as uplifting as it is vigorous, and the artwork looks fabulous too. Wicked!
