TRENCHROT – Necronomic Warfare

TRENCHROT – Necronomic Warfare

‘Necronomic Warfare’ is the debut full-length from US DM act Trenchrot. In terms of sound, it kind of reminds me of Asphyx with a side of Bolt Thrower and a dash of Autopsy thrown in. There are slow, staggering riffs made all the more effective by the monolithic guitar sound. Trenchrot can blast too, but they are perhaps at their best chopping and changing – from D-beat DM to more thrashy territory and back in the space of a few bars. The guitar work is great too, with surprisingly melodic and pyrotechnic leads, and everyone involved knows how to lay down a heavy groove.
Stylistically, ‘Necronomic Warfare’ has an old-school feel, but Trenchrot have managed to incorporate many of the things those in the scene have learned about making quality death metal in recent years – providing variety, having a sound that is dirty enough to create atmosphere and feel immediate and authentic but also clear enough to focus all of the power unleashed in the studio etc.
‘Necronomic Warfare’ isn’t without its failings. Some of the songs aren’t as strong as they could be and that means the listener can switch off at times – but that is also part of the charm and gives the band something to work towards on future releases. If Trenchrot continue to hone their craft over the coming year we could be looking at them becoming much more widely known and appreciated. And deservedly so!
