Hard rock, heavy metal, stoner rock- whatever way you chose to slice it, Sweden’s Mustasch continue to excel at the art of wrenching all the right emotion out of every song they write and play. "Thank You For the Demon" builds upon their last release 2012’s "Sounds Like Hell, Looks Like Heaven"- 9 songs that are as delightful direct as they are powerful. Orchestral maneuvers and larger background vocals make the title cut a mournful metal masterpiece- "From Euphoria to Dystopia" chugs along with the mid-tempo thump similarity to "The Thing That Should Not Be" intertwined with Queens of the Stone Age and Thin Lizzy, bassist Stam Johansson and drummer Jejo Perkovic a double edge rhythm machine filling up the sound during the verses.
"The Mauler" is another morose doom piece of professionalism, guitarist David Johannesson and fellow guitarist /vocalist Ralf Gyllenhammar keeping the low tuned chord selection simple and echo effective- Danzig and Black Sabbath would be proud. "All My Life" is the longest track at almost 7 minutes, a semi-acoustic piece that showcases Ralf’s impressive melodic/gritty delivery as a singer – aspects of Ian Astbury and Glenn Danzig come into focus and then the band kicks into electric gear with an almost Cyclone Temple meets "One" riff that should tear many a head and body to smithereens. And don’t get me started on "I Hate to Dance" – fusing an electronic/ industrial drum template against the low rumbling bass and guitars, it shouldn’t work and yet it does because Mustasch simply know what works in the world of metal and hard rock.
Deserving the critical and fan adulation that comes to them, Mustasch continue to provide awe-inspired songwriting that hits the mark as the band age like fine vintage wine. "Thank You for the Demon" will live on long after these words vanish from the face of this earth.
