HERETIC – Angelcunts and Devilcocks

Heretic has to be one of the most widely used names for a metal act, so I should start by saying this is the Dutch Heretic and "Angelcunts and Devilcocks" is their fourth full-length. Those with finely honed deductive skills will probably have guessed the lyrical content from the title and cover artwork – Satan, fucking, semen, bestiality, sodomy and pissing seem to be the main topics, although there is mention of a ‘Sex Messiah’ and some ‘Diabolic Intercourse’ in case you get tired of all the cocks…

I can understand that some might find the cover and lyrics offensive, but from my viewpoint they are too cartoonish to bring about a decline in morals and the fall of Western civilisation, so I found them worth a chuckle.

The music on offer is dirty, sleazy black and roll. In terms of style it has the punk appeal of early GWAR/Mentors, but also a black thrash edge that in places reminds me of Venom or Nifelheim with plenty of catchy chanted choruses and rocking guitar lines. No riff is too cheesy for this shitburger! The direct approach used makes "Angelcunts and Devilcocks" accessible, headbanging fun, although it also has the downside of being a bit simplistic and one dimensional. Having said that, there are some unexpectedly deft melodic touches that demonstrate a decent level of musicianship.
