JOTNAR – Giant

A five piece melodic death metal act originating from Spain, Jotnar started in 2008 and develop a potent blend of modern heaviness with obvious guitar harmonic sensibilities and clean chorus melodies from a number of Swedish/ American mentors. “In Process” for instance has this obvious rhythmic groove stomp coming from the Slipknot/ Sevendust framework but the dual Ben Melero/ Elhadji N’Diaye guitar work surely sets your brainwaves and eardrums off into In Flames/ Beyond The Embrace discography. “I Am Giant” has a swirling keyboard effect and cool little acoustic guitar nuances in its mid-tempo arrangement along with a great mix of ferocious gruff vocals and hypnotic, alternative –like lyric deliveries.
There isn’t a bad song out of the five on this EP- “Giant” takes the “Whoracle” period of In Flames, stirs in a modicum of current, aggressive fueled principles in terms of grooves/ rhythms and out pops a 21:29 effort that left me wanting much more in a good way. Gracias, Jotnar- let this be the start of a productive musical life.
