DRAWN INTO DESCENT – Onrust

The Belgian black metal squadron Drawn Into Descent (whose harrowing musical resume is rather impressive in terms of quality, I might add) have returned and unleashed a punishing new opus entitled Onrust, which sees the outfit exploring even darker and more unnerving territory than previously.

From the epic howl of suffering that is the 12-minute opening track “Teloorgang” to the climactic and soul-destroying finale that is “Ogen,” this LP is a perfect example of how to mold and sculpt the soundtrack to modern-day existential angst and fathomless dread. I used the term black metal earlier on, but that hardly begins to cover what these morose chaps are all about; something akin to atmospheric (post-) black metal infused with doom metal and colored by the darkest yet nevertheless subtle post-rock gloom imaginable would be more like it. Picture a bleak cityscape (and a rather suffocating one at that!) in which a postmodern notion of displacement, fragmented identities, and boundless agony loom large, and then translate all of that misery into riffs, lyrics, melodies, and vocals – that is essentially where Onrust breathes and festers to these ears.

Each of the four compositions is a slow-burning affair full of textures and enigmas, and though the band vary the tempo throughout and throw several interesting ideas into the mix, there is an overall pace to the organic-sounding and staggeringly heavy output that envelops the thing in a transfixing aura. Pretty much every element works in favor of the song in question and there is a beautiful flow to this stroke of despairing musical genius that makes it an absolute must-have. Somewhere between urban wretchedness and dystopian longing is where you will find what is surely one of the finest entries in the Immortal Frost Productions discography yet.
