PRIMALUCE – Way of Perfection

The French prog metal act known as Primaluce released the impressive Dark Mirrors LP last year, which generated quite a lot of well-deserved praise, and it is therefore a thrill to see and hear that they have maintained their momentum and crafted an equally worthwhile offering in the shape of the cohesive Way of Perfection.

Way of Perfection is a gloriously melodic affair in every sense of the word regardless of whether we are talking about the strong and memorable vocal lines, the inventive riffs and leads, or the inspired keyboard work that features prominently in the mix. Variety and dynamics are certainly not foreign concepts to these talented chaps, and we move rather seamlessly from intimate and almost tender moments to heavy and majestic outbursts that exude a prevalent sense of yearning, and its many layers are imbued with meaning and purpose. The drums lack a bit of punch and not every idea of theirs is a winner, but overall, this is a powerful album that displays a musically fearless attitude all the while brimming with energy. The emotive and heartfelt “When the Light Returns” soars and is a fine composition that transcends genres and touches the soul, and its chorus is just to die for. The epic “The Turning of the Circle” also boasts fantastic musicianship and even better arrangements and melodies, which could also be said for the beautiful and hook-laden “In the Tides of Time.”  

There is an abundance of ambition and promise contained within its grooves, and the cinematic scope to it all contributes to making it a highly interesting listen that feels akin to embarking on a journey within. Primaluce has essentially balanced catchy songwriting with prog metal essentials and trademarks, which means that you should check this one out.
