The legendary Robin Trower (ex-Procol Harum) has been impressively productive not to mention highly creative these past many years as evidenced by a string of robust and enjoyable solo offerings. As solid as many of those outputs are, the stage is where Trower truly shines and also where his songs pack the most emotional punch and deliver an abundance of life-affirming thrills. A case in point is this upcoming live album of his appropriately titled One Moment in Time, which sees the supremely skilled blues rocker churning out fourteen superbly arranged renditions of some of his best tunes and gems from his back catalog with the 1974 masterpiece Bridge of Sighs being prominently represented.

Backed by a stellar group of musicians and filled to the brim with warmth, vigor, and exhilarating licks that display the unique flavor and tone of Robin’s playing, the disc never really loses its momentum nor is there any dipping in overall quality with respect to the musicianship, enthusiasim, and the selection of material aired. Nothing appears superfluous or out of place. The raw and organic nature of the entire affair and particularly the inherent longing and melancholy of tracks such as “Somebody’s Calling,” “Birdsong,” and “Wither on the Vine” make this an essential listen. What is arguably the best part of this live LP is that Robin sings and plays them with an authority and conviction that can only come with age and experience; he actually makes it sound as if he has “lived” these compositions and somehow embody their very essence. You could hardly ask for more with respect to a live album, could you?!

This is one of the finest entries and most rewarding listens in the great man’s classy repertoire, which is saying something. If classic rock, blues rock, or just great rock music in general is your thing, you could do worse than cranking this one up loud and getting lost in that wonderful and stirring aura of Trower’s guitar as it emanates from the speakers and fills the room. There is an understated power to this opus.
