The second installment in the talented Toby Jepson’s (Wayward Sons, Little Angels) “Look Out” chronicle will be out in late October and trumps its predecessor in every conceivable way. As simple as that, really. Now, do please read on, okay?

Weaving traits and influences from classic rock, early seventies glam rock, and singer-songwriter music together and then throwing his own unique style and melodic flair into the mix, this 8-track offering somehow manages to sound both familiar and new, or fresh, if you will. While the lyrics are undoubtedly highly personal and the themes quite serious, there is an inherently positive aura and uplifting spirit to the compositions. Jepson’s work is very much about overcoming things, be they obstacles or traumas, and the words that are scattered across these tunes reflect some deep-seated issues and problems that he has had to deal with in life, which makes for an emotionally charged listening experience.

The song material is incredibly accessible and easy on the ear, the riffs are robust, and the vocals possess a certain warmth and something akin to a soothing quality that is greatly appealing. The loose, almost stomping “Some People Are Trash” is a standout, and “Nothing to See Here” is a big, riveting rock anthem containing some delightful hooks that will worm their way into your skull. Its poignant lyrics are brilliant, too. The emotive and touching closing track “Creeping up Slowly” serves as a perfect ending to an engaging piece of work, and in many ways, this candid and inspired opus speaks of the power of change and the importance of love. Memorable and potent stuff for sure.
