MONSTRUM – released debut demo tape

Monstrum started as a two-piece in the summer of 2024 in northern Germany by friends Heiko Schütt and Timo Hahn over their mutual musicial interests and ambitions and their shared admiration for old-school death metal. Started from the ashes of their respective previous bands, the duo set out to deliver death metal that is as much destructive as it is dark and emotive, striking a balance between hard-hitting brutality and catchy songwriting, with some strong melodic leanings. 

Monstrum was formed in the midst of vocalist Heiko’s cancer battle, serving as a tool for him to let out lots of darkness and negativity in these troubled times, resulting in a bleak, hopeless song such as closing number ‘Drawn to the Dark’ or the cancer-themed lyrics to the sharp and heavy Timo composition ‘Torn by Disease’. Many more songs were penned during this tumultuous time, as well as since then. This demo is just the beginning!

The demo contains five songs (plus an intro track) mostly inspired by old school death metal, but with some very melodic and groovy tendencies throughout and a strong emphasis on catchy songwriting, dark atmosphere and emotions.

After the more optimistic, hopeful opening song ‘Beyond the Stars’, the songs on this demo deal with heavy themes such as depression, drug abuse, trauma and my own battle with cancer, which in a way led to the formation of this band.
