What a fabulous outfit this is! Irish/Venezuelan rockers Brake Loose have made quite a name for themselves this past year or so thanks to some stellar live performances, and there is something quite refreshing and invigorating about this inspired five-track EP of theirs appropriately titled Frenetic.
Taking their cues from 80s goth rock and having added a modern sheen and a wicked twist to it, the band’s compositions contain plenty of snappy riffs, hooky vocal melodies, and charming nods to Billy Idol and The Cult. Funnily, a few riffs and vocal lines also made me think of the Graves-fronted era of the Misfits, which is a compliment. The EP’s infections energy and ability to create something that feels new and different yet strangely familiar due to its musical influences make this gem a tough one to beat. There is obviously lots of promise and potential on display on Frenetic, and what Brake Loose do in general might well send them to the very top if there is any justice in this ridiculous world of ours, but this particular release actually comes across as pretty much fully formed and in possession of a strong identity of its own. The future is looking bright for these chaps, and you could do worse than losing your mind to the powerful and heavy tracks named “Love on Fire” and “Kiss Me Bye Bye.” Simply put, it sounds wonderfully massive and big.
Frenetic will be out via Symphonic Distribution on May 30.
