Receiving a new album by the fabulous international constellation known as W.E.T. is always a treat and this fifth full-length LP of theirs is no exception. Their line-up is akin to a wet dream (see what I did there?) to lovers of fist-pumping melodic hard rock and there is nothing quite like hearing Jeff Scott Soto sing his ass off on top of some meaty, arena-sized riffs and massive sing-along choruses, is there? Right then, let us move on and briefly discuss this strikingly effective and exceptionally well-produced album, shall we?
Its eleven compositions encompass everything that makes W.E.T. such a noteworthy and memorable encounter, and the primary reason these gentlemen rule is not merely down to the fact that they are world-class musicians; it is because they write great and passionate songs with longevity to them (and seemingly do so rather effortlessly), which is constantly emphasized throughout Apex. There is crunch and power to the affair, and the group’s relentless flair for churning out tunes that leave a wonderfully lasting aftertaste is prominently and proudly displayed from beginning to end. W.E.T. has always seemed like an unconventional band, which may sound strange to some as it can hardly be called a pioneering or innovative ensemble, nor do they deliver anything new per say, but they do the melodic hard rock thing so incredibly well and way better than most that comparing them to others seems like a futile exercise. One can only marvel at how cool infectious tracks such as “Believer,” “Stay Alive,” “Where Are the Heroes Now,” and “Pay Dirt” are, and those examples were just the first ones that popped into my head.
Every aspect of Apex is predictably delicious, and this is one piece of work that is bound to turn up the temperature. Highly accomplished seems like a fitting way to sum this one up.
