MISTRA – Waltz of Death (single)

What we have here is really interesting, and although I hardly ever bother reviewing singles, I simply could not resist the temptation to write a few short sentences about this wicked slab of vinyl that I was lucky enough to get my filthy paws on.

Dark and melancholy and with a slightly eerie vibe slithering underneath it seems to sum up this eclectic and captivating blend of metal and pop – something that is hardly surprising considering the musical diversity and potency of the line-up, which consists of renowned pop/classical singer Benedicte Adrian and Cadaver’s hugely skilled mastermind Anders Odden. Then again, the result is actually a delightful surprise, and I love its many textures, the otherworldly atmosphere, and the fact that it is original and different. The chorus is as big and majestic as anything you will hear this year and Benedicte’s vocals are outright haunting all the while Anders conjures up a thick, pulsating soundscape that envelops it all. The B-side is an alternate version of the title track that is undoubtedly enjoyable but also adds a few other colors and nuances to an already great track. Comparing the two renditions is quite cool and shows a certain development, if you catch my drift. Hats off to the ever-reliable Gymnocal Industries for putting this innovative piece of brooding music out there.
