SOULCARRION – Soulcarrion

The Polish death metal squadron Soulcarrion impressed me greatly by means of the rotten and highly efficient Infernal Agony full-length assault last year, and this short and lethal 4-track EP basically offers more of the same, which means that you get a batch of killer tunes that evoke the spirit of memorable old-school death metal in a most convincing manner. The cursed affair is raw and menacing yet also surprisingly catchy and morbidly entertaining, and there is just something about this self-titled effort that sets it apart from so many similar-sounding releases out there. That could be due to it carrying an atmosphere that is darkly compelling all the way through but I would wager that it is primarily because there is such an enduring determination to keep things interesting at every twist and turn from beginning to end. The knife-wielding riffs and energetic rhythm section coupled with the brutal vocals and the memorable quality of the song material make this a fabulous entry in the band’s discography and one that fans of the genre ought to invest their time and hard-earned cash in. The whole thing peaks with ‘Death Revelation’ and the unnerving ‘Salvation’. Glorious stuff.
