The American hard rock act known as Heavens Edge made a name for themselves back in the late eighties and early nineties and released some quality stuff then, but they kind of dropped off the radar shortly after, and I will be the first to admit that I was rather surprised when Get It Right showed up in my mailbox.
Singer Mark Evans is fronting the 2023 lineup, and their brand of rock music very much harkens back to the days of old, which is not miles away from what Skid Row and Bon Jovi were putting out in the very beginning of their careers. Easy on the ear and easily digestible, this is an enjoyable and pleasant thing to listen to albeit one that is neither musically remarkable nor decidedly captivating as it lacks songs that are truly special. The vocals are slightly hit-or-miss at times and very few of the compositions are brimming with attitude and energy. ‘When the Lights Go Down’ is a well-written power ballad boasting a strong chorus, ‘9 Lives (My Immortal Life)’ is a raw and gritty delight, and ‘Beautiful Disaster’ is arguably the catchiest and most fully formed piece on the disc, but a few more rip-roaring tunes would have been nice. This is not a bad output as such, but ultimately it just so happens to be one of those records that you will not necessarily be returning to either as there are more exciting alternatives out there.
