66CRUSHER – Limbo

Progressive thrashers 66Crusher have returned with their fourth album, and this is one juicy and explosive musical cocktail that appeals to me greatly. “Why is that?” I hear you ask. Well, these talented Norwegians have a firm grasp of how to weave outstanding melodies and muscular, meaty riffs together to stunning effect – talk about variety and keeping things interesting and unpredictable at all times! Not only is the production crystal clear and full of vigor and power but the creative arrangements and well-written (and dare I say philosophical) lyrics deserve heaps of praise too. The record comes across as quite concise and does not outstay its welcome, nor does it lack that sense of the epic and positively bombastic that some of the best prog metal outfits deliver. There are a few instances where the vocals are not entirely up to scratch and fail to complement the blistering riffs, but those instances are rare, and I am thoroughly pleased with how this one turned out. You should seriously consider spending some time in its company regardless of whether you are into Opeth or Forbidden. The colossal title track alone makes this disc an essential purchase.
