The intriguing International black metal ensemble known as Liber Null is back, and this sophomore effort of theirs has not only surpassed the debut offering but also exceeded my expectations. Cold and punishing metal with a hauntingly bleak tone running through it is what lies in store for you but mark my words when I say that you will be pleasantly surprised at just how musically diverse and dynamic this stunningly dark opus is. The forlorn and gloomy melodies conjure up a truly brooding and at times infinitely sad aura that is impossible to shake or not be moved by. It is as if the emotional pull and potency of these six superbly constructed compositions has its feet firmly planted in some deep-seated yearning and a desire to penetrate the mysteries of life and death. If that sounds abstract to that tiny thing you call a brain then do me a favor and study the words and lyrics to “For Whom Is the Night” while listening closely to every shade and nuance of the music. It is quite the beautiful experience, is it not? And would you not agree that “To Death’s Light” is one of the most majestic black metal tunes to see the light of day for quite some time now?
With its professional production and great performances from everyone involved not to mention the actual quality of the song material itself, this disc is a real keeper and an impressive piece of work in every aspect. On a final note, I love the artwork and visual presentation of the CD too. Thoroughly brilliant!
