PYMLICO – Supermassive

Norwegian prog(-ish) rockers Pymlico have returned with an elegantly structured album that brilliantly showcases that the 7-piece band are on peak form and know exactly how to craft admirably sparkling songs that crackle with energy. “Supermassive” is close in spirit to the group’s previous outputs, which is to say that it incorporates elements from jazz and symphonic rock and blends things together to great effect, but these guys have never sounded as vigorous and playful as they do here. Things flow incredibly well, and these melodically gorgeous compositions are steeped in atmosphere and brimming with class and sophistication. From epic to intimate and further on to heavy and unpredictable, the LP is a superb addition to the instrumental prog rock canon. Who in their right mind would not be swept away by the funky “Little Nellie” or the Pink Floyd-esque “Clockwork”? Exquisite and surprisingly groovy instrumental music with countless nuances and a pristine sound to it.
