BLOODFEAST RITUAL – Altars Of Sacrifice

Lately, there have been a mlutitude of new technical melodic death metal bands, particularly from The Artisan Era and Jon Asher’s Asher Media Relations. These bands usually oscillate between The Black Dahlia Murder, Arsis and early Revocation with various other elements such as old school death metal and they all, frankly, sound alike. So it is in this case, the independently released, Jon Asher promoted, Los Angeles trio of David Ainsworth (vocals), Hunter Gurney (guitars, bass), Michael Nystrom Bala (guitars, bass) who had nicknamed this debut EP "our love letter to death metal". While they showcase significant instrumental skills, Bloodfeast Ritual songwriting ability is still in its initial stages of development, recalling the Cryptic Warning/Revocation earliest days.

It must be said that this material is not the most memorable 5 songs ever recorded. While "Eternally Molested By The One Most Foul" (someone loves Howard Phillips Lovecraft) has almost the right amount of hooks and balance to call it a great song and the favorite, the closer "Fetid Offering" owes more to melodic thrash than death, the rest of this death and roll, despite its inherently catchy nature, causes one to long for more variety and change of pace.

Perhaps the full length, should they come up with one, should bring both aforementioned aspects to the table but, as it is now, Bloodfeast Ritual is a rather unremarkable and forgettable affair in the sea of like sounding peers.
