TOOTHGRINDER – Nocturnal Masquerade

This is my first encounter with Toothgrinder and a satisfactory meeting it has turned out to be. In terms of genre, this is progressive metallic hardcore, but it doesn’t limit itself to that. At times it is slow  and dreamily melodic, rocking like it was made for radio or blasting with frenetic energy. And this flexibility and openness is one of the greatest things about Toothgrinder, because they manage to switch modes so seamlessly and so convincingly and to be so convincing at each stage. Kind of like Converge in a mash up with Mastodon.
As ever with this type of release it all comes down to the quality of the songs and although there are a few slightly flatter moments, on the whole this is full of memorable, slamming beats and catchy hooks. Five thumbs up!
