SATANIC WARMASTER / ARCHGOAT – Lux Satanae – Split

I’m not a massive fan of Split albums as no matter how much I might like either artist, I always feel like there are winners and losers. This time around I give the victory to Satanic Warmaster. They have been playing pretty much the same style of lycanthropic BM since the year 2000 and this is about as good as anything I have heard from the multi-instrumentalist Werwolf. No great change in approach but the songs manage to hit the coffin nail on the head each time. (5) The Pest cover rules!

Archgoat are more of a mixed success this time around. I am a fan of their doomy, groovy BM and love their slow parts when the unholy bells begin to ring. Some of their more up-tempo stuff can be a bit hit and miss for me and I’m afraid that is the case here – so while there are some epic moments, the overall package isn’t as consistent as it could have been. (4.5)  Having said that, it’s not a bad performance from Archgoat – just that the quality dips at times (like Satanic Oath for example). If a band only has to pull together half a record worth of songs, weaker fragments and tracks shouldn’t be making the final cut like that.
